UK warned against watering down carbon targets

UK warned against watering down carbon reduction targets

An influential group of MPs has weighed into the simmering row over the UK's carbon budgets, warning that the carbon reduction targets for 2022 will be missed because of poor government policy on energy and the environment.

Carbon budgets have become a key political battleground as George Osborne has promised that the UK will not lead on climate action because the UK should not price itself out of international energy markets by placing heavy environmental burden on suppliers.

Joan Walley, chair of the environmental audit committee, said: "Emissions are currently not falling fast enough to prevent a dangerous destabilization of the global climate in the coming decades.

But most Tories want to ignore the committee and choose looser carbon targets. The row could take months to resolve, and is likely to prove unsettling for green investors and businesses who want a clear view on the policy.

The key reasons the 2022 targets would not be met were the failure to insulate houses and reduce the amount of gaseous carbon which are caused by transport and heat production, the report found.

Buenos Aires is switching around street lamps to LED technology

Buenos Aires in Argentina is the second biggest city in South-America, with about 13 million people. To light up the city at night requires over 125,000 street lamps. So that must equal a lot of energy just to power them
After a public bidding process, Philips has been selected to replace most of  the city's streetlamps with new LED models. These LED streetlights are expected to reduce energy use by half for the city, which in turn will means a significant reduction in CO2 production and also reducing the amount of money spent making the energy

Dino and bees were decimated at Dino impact

Scientists say there was a  extinction of bees 66 million years ago at the same time as the event that killed off the dinosaurs. But the extinction event was very selective, affecting some groups more than others.

The researchers chose to study bees of the subfamily known as Xylocopinae, which included the carpenter bees. This was because the evolutionary history of this group could be traced back to the Cretaceous Period.

"Understanding extinctions and the effects of declines in the past can help us understand the pollinator decline and the global crisis in pollinators today," Dr Rehan explained.

Stop badger cull immediately

The public disagreement over the badger cull taking place in Gloucester should be stopped immediately, says the lead scientist on the board of Natural England (NE), the organisation charged with making the decision

NE, the nation's official protector of nature, will rule Monday on whether the night-time badger shoots can be significantly extended. Owen Paterson, and the National Farmers' Union, who argue that killing badgers to curb tuberculosis in cattle is scientifically justified and necessary.

The badger cull is also being jeopardised by a legal threat launched on Saturday.
